So, it seems like a stupid question but why is the loader returning STATUS_DLL_NOT_FOUND? It's also not an issue with the DLL itself because I made a simple Hello World DLL just for testing and I verified the bitness of the DLL and injected program match. Even as FASTIO I would expect some notification but maybe my expectation is incorrect.

I even modified the altitude to make it the very top of the driver stack but still nothing. Now what is really odd is that my file system minifilter does not get any PreCreate notification for the injected file. Procmon doesn't seem to interpret the return value properly but my breakpoint after LdrLoadDll shows as 0xC0000135. Second, in Procmon I see that the injected process makes a single FASTIO_NETWORK_QUERY_OPEN call that returns NAME INVALID. The DLL is actually where the file name is pointing.ДЇor some background, I'm injecting a DLL via kernel APC using a small bit of shellcode written to the process address space and I'm stuck at why LdrLoadDll is returning STATUS_DLL_NOT_FOUND.ДЇirst, as I mentioned the DLL is in fact in the location and accessible without any permissions issue. A clue as to the limitations of this platform (WIC) or the limitations of WPV? PS: A program called FastPictureViewer supports animated gifs in the photo viewer, but you can only 'view individual frames within animated GIFs'. or did Microsoft seriously not get around to adding the support themselves? So, what I'm asking is, is the reason the photo viewer doesn't support animated gifs is because of the fact that WIC only supports still images? Or is it that WPV doesn't have supported coded in for animated formats but WIC codecs can support them? If it's either of these reasons, I guess I have no reason to start this project (creating a WIC codec for animated GIFs). I'm guessing this means I could make a replacement GIF codec to replace the built-in one, but before I do I need to know something.

But since the photo viewer uses WIC ( Windows Imaging Component) to decode images, this system can be used to add support for just about any format.

People have suggested various third-party software (AKA not the built-in windows photo viewer) to solve this shortcoming. I've been doing a bit of research to find out why Windows 7 won't support animated GIF images in the photo viewer natively.
